A Blue Butterfly Spreads Its Wings for Breast Cancer Research
It's a strikingly beautiful image: A butterfly spreading its delicate wings, a glowing and brilliant blue, dozens of feet high on a billboard. Then with the image's impact, the words resonate: "Daddy, did Mommy like butterflies?"
A poignant and unforgettable campaign, the soothing "Blue Butterfly" image was created by acclaimed Manhattan photographer Tommy Flynn, and has been chosen several times throughout the past years as a popular icon for its Breast Cancer Research Foundation's Find-A-Cure billboard campaign. Designed by the advertising agency Bates USA, Flynn's Blue Butterfly provides the perfect bittersweet visual counterpoint to the child's question, and underscores the mission of the Find-A-Cure campaign.
The image created by Flynn is a striking shot of a butterfly with wings outstretched and a stunning, semi-translucent azure blue. The size of the billboard and the prominent placement of the butterfly within the frame mean that the image's details are extraordinarily visible. As with many of Flynn's images, the butterfly appears both real and unreal - dreamlike, yet realistic.
Flynn's "Blue Butterfly" has been featured on billboards in ten cities throughout the country, as part of the Breast Cancer Research Foundation's ongoing Find-A-Cure campaigns. The billboards were funded and created by Estée Lauder, Inc., as part of the effort to generate vital public awareness and support for breast cancer research. First unveiled in the Fall of 2001, the "Butterflies" campaign reappeared in Fall of 2002, as well, in ten major U.S. cities, including: New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Detroit, Philadelphia, Boston, Dallas, and Atlanta. The billboard itself was created and designed by Bates USA, headed by Creative Director Michael Litman and Art Buyer Jamie Stern.
